The Forex Trader’s Bill of Rights is a non-fiction book about the foreign currency trading market, published by OANDA_Corporation. It is primarily a call to arms for currency traders to call for greater transparency and accountability within the market. The overleaf provided with the printed version of the book states: “Big banks and confederated brokerages have overcomplicated forex: trading costs are inflated, unnecessary risk abounds, and the system is grossly unfair.” Essentially, the book elaborates on this premise, detailing ways in which traders are being unfairly treated and encouraging them to take action.
OANDA is a company that provides currency trading tools for investors, travelers, and businesses. As such, there is an unavoidable marketing aspect to this publication. However, OANDA is not mentioned throughout the book. There has been a clear effort to maintain a relatively neutral point of view. The back cover does state “OANDA is a leading provider of online currency trading…FXTrade…enables all currency investors to change the way forex trading is done”.
The authors believe currency investors have 10 basic rights which are being violated: each short chapter deals with one of these rights. They are:
1. The right to immediate, uncensored access to the marketplace
2. The right to trade real spot
3. The right to know
4. The right to trade whenever you want
5. The right to equal treatment
6. The right to choose and manage risk
7. The right to understand cost
8. The right to learn – on your own, or through free exchange with other traders
9. The right to full disclosure
10. The right to pay and receive interest
1) The right to immediate, uncensored access to the marketplace Chapter one argues that when trading traditionally (with banks etc.,) execution and price are affected by who you are (size of your order/ relationship with your market maker etc.), the amount of greed on the part of the market maker, and manual intervention which can delay the trade. The chapter calls for transparency, fairness, and efficiency for traders from market makers.
2) The right to trade real spot
Chapter two addresses unnecessary delays in settlement of trades, which according to the authors increase risk for investors.
3) The right to know
The third chapter states that market makers share information based on who you are: in some cases they share information that should not be shared; in other cases they do not share information that should be publicly available. This leads to an unfair advantage.
4) The right to trade whenever you want
The chapter asserts that market makers may advertise 24 hour trading but they close the books on Friday. However, world events which affect currency price occur on weekends. The argument continues that since the technology for 24/7 trading is available, it should be offered by all market makers.
5) The right to equal treatment
Chapter five argues that every trader should be given the same price and spread, and that market makers should not discriminate between traders.
6) The right to choose and manage risk
Traders are encouraged to use a market maker who does not require high minimums, lets them trade any amount, and provides immediate settlement as a way of minimizing risk.
7) The right to understand cost
It is reasoned that traders have the right to understand spreads, as well as who gets a “cut” and why. This chapter also includes a profitability calculator.
8) The right to learn – on your own, or through free exchange with other traders
This chapter covers multiple ways to learn about trading, and test new strategies, including trading games offered by online market makers and other sources of Internet information.
9) The right to full disclosure
The book claims that a lack of transparency in pricing, execution, and after the trade needs to addressed. Market makers should publish statistics regarding real spreads and prices and traders should demand that they do this.
10) The right to pay and receive interest
It is argued that continuous interest should be introduced, which would make for price flows that are less volatile.

Nokia debuts totally fugly 7500 Prism in China

By all accounts, Nokia's designers are either on a cutting edge so far into the future and so deeply advanced that we can't understand it, or they've all gone off their medication. The bizarre 7500 Prism (which may or may not be the similarly styled 7900) made its debut at a Nokia fashion event in China today, along with the 8600, 8800 Sirocco, 6110 navigator, 5700 XpressMusic, 6500 classic, 6500 slider and the 3500 -- though none of them were as totally zany looking as the Prism. The phone's specs are at least fairly normal, featuring a 2 megapixel camera, microSD slot, a QVGA screen and rocking the S40 (version 5) OS. It's unclear at this point why the company believes people will want a diamond shaped keyboard, but since the FCC has already approved this model, we'll soon learn if they really do.

The Social Machines
Machine-to-machine communications, in which communication is carried out among machines without any human involvement at all, soon will be a part of everyday life. This year will see about 10 billion microprocessors sold and embedded in everything from computers to coffeemakers. In the future, such devices could be networked, said Nortel CTO John Roese, who calls the trend "hyperconnectivity."
Putting in 45 minutes on the health-club treadmill isn't the exercise in boredom that it used to be.
Today you can touch a button on a treadmill's screen and watch the "Office" episode you downloaded to your iPod. Plug a USB Latest News about USB stick into the machine, and your preprogrammed workout pops up. After you're done, just save your workout results on the stick and track your performance over time.
Welcome to a world where even treadmills are networked, as equipment designers strive to engage body and mind.
"We try to appeal to people in different ways," said John Stransky, chief of Schiller Park, Ill.-based Life Fitness, a global maker of exercise machines. "It's a combination of engagement and entertainment. Some people don't want to work out, and we try to take their minds off it."
Personalized Entertainment
In fact, some futurists predict that in 15 to 20 years more than 1 trillion devices, most of them wireless, will be connected to global networks, according to Nortel.
Hooking iPods to exercise bikes and treadmills lets users more easily select the music they want, using the built-in touch screen to control their selections. Video iPods can transmit directly to screens embedded in the exercise machinery.
"Personalized entertainment keeps people coming back to the machines," said Robert Quast, Life Fitness senior director for cardio-product management.
Networking equipment is especially helpful for patients who use machines for medically prescribed workouts, said Michael Shew, assistant manager of the Vanderbilt Orthopedic Institute in Nashville, Tenn. Workout information becomes part of a patient's electronic medical record that physicians can review, he said. It also may encourage the patient to keep working.
"What am I investing? What's my return?" Shew said. "When people can see a tangible result that measures progress, that's fantastic."
The Dark Side
Health clubs may use networked information to send messages to members who have been slacking off, trying to lure them back, said Ted Lepucki, senior director of technology realization at Life Fitness.
Getting people's competitive juices flowing is another way networked fitness equipment can help motivate people, said Paul Saffo, a technology forecaster based in Silicon Valley. Already there are video games intended to encourage children to exercise, he said, and exercise soon will become part of virtual reality Web sites such as Second Life.
"I guarantee people on stationary machines will stage bicycle races in Second Life," Saffo said.
However, he added, "There's a dark side to all this."
"When you put a computer into an ordinary machine, it means the machine will go obsolete sooner," Saffo said. "You'll have all these exercise bikes with obsolete computers appearing at garage sales Free White Paper - What Retailers Should Know about M-Commerce. It's diabolical. The more computers companies put into things, the sooner people want the new version."
A New Kind of Social Network
Machine-to-machine communications, in which communication is carried out among machines without any human involvement at all, soon will be a part of everyday life, Roese said.
"All machines will talk seamlessly," he said. "Nothing new need be invented. It's just a matter of linking things to the network."
Home appliances like air conditioners and clothes dryers should talk to the electric company to take advantage of rates that fluctuate by the hour, running full blast when electric rates are low and dialing back as they rise. The automobile is a prime example of how improved networking will change our lives, Roese said.
"With your car connected to the Internet, you should always been going to the right place," he said.
A phone call or e-mail from a client to cancel a meeting would go directly into the network, enabling it to reroute the car to the next scheduled appointment, Roese said. In this world, your car will even talk to your lawn sprinkler, telling it to shut off as you approach your driveway so you can cross the lawn without getting wet, he said.
Federal officials also are creating standards so that cars can communicate with traffic lights as they approach intersections. When the traffic signal communicates that it is about to change from green to red, your car would know to slow down for the stop, said Craig Pickering, a senior associate with the Booz Allen Hamilton consultancy.
A test of such a system is planned for the Detroit area, Pickering said.
"They're working on security Barracuda Spam Firewall Free Eval Unit - Click Here and privacy for the system," he said. "You don't want Big Brother to know everything, or hackers to get in."
Although much of this may have the ring of the distant future, experts predict that hyperconnectivity is just around the corner, as wireless networks are built and chips are designed to access them.
"I'd say that by 2009 to 2010, we'll see the maturing of this industry," Roese said

Jobs, Gates and a Trip Down Memory Lane

Steve Jobs and Bill Gates form one of the technology industry's great stories, from the time in the mid-'70s when, within a few years of each other, they formed computer companies that would change the world. During their meeting at the All Things Digital conference, Jobs quoted the Beatles: "You and I have memories longer than the road that stretches out ahead
They didn't introduce themselves by saying "Hello, I'm a Mac," "and I'm a PC" -- but the cheeky Apple. Latest News about Apple adverts ribbing Microsoft. Latest News about Microsoft were never far from the surface as the tech companies' founders, Steve Jobs and Bill Gates, appeared on stage together for the first time in a decade.
"The art of those commercials is not to be mean. It's for the guys to like each other," Jobs said, raising a laugh from a Silicon Valley audience, and a disbelieving look from Gates. "PC guy is what makes it work, PC guy is great." Gates gave his chin a skeptical rub: "Well, his mother loves him."
The ads, which in the UK star David Mitchell and Robert Webb, have been needling Microsoft all over the world, and prompted Gates earlier this year to say Apple was spreading lies. While the atmosphere was more cordial as the two agreed to a historic joint interview at a technology conference in Carlsbad, Calif., it was hard not to think of the ads. Steve Jobs sat in a black polo shirt and jeans, while Gates had shined his shoes and gone for a casual striped white shirt.
Stormy Relationship
Gates wasn't joking when he answered a question about his rival by saying: "I would give a lot to have Steve's taste." He added that while he may see a software problem as an "engineering issue," Jobs "has an intuitive taste both for people and products that is very hard for me even to explain."
With Apple enjoying a resurgence in cool thanks to the success of its iPod, and with Microsoft's operating system Manage remotely with one interface -- the HP ProLiant DL360 G5 server. Vista being panned by users, the ads are the latest chapter in a stormy relationship punctuated by breakups and kiss-and-make-ups.
It is one of the technology industry's great stories, from the time in the mid-'70s when, within a few years of each other, they formed computer companies that would change the world. Attendees at the All Things Digital conference were treated to footage from an Apple event in 1983 when a long-haired Steve Jobs hosted a "Blind Date" style event with software executives, including Gates, who were vying to design software for his computers. (He picked all three.) There was also a reminder of the last time the two appeared together, officially burying the hatchet after Steve Jobs returned to rescue Apple from oblivion in 1997.
Joined Forces
The 90-minute conversation that followed was definitely in the kiss-and-make-up mold. "Bill built the first software company in the industry. And I think he built the first software company before anybody in our industry knew what a software company was," Jobs said.
They did trade a few jabs, not least about the iPod, which Microsoft is trying to replicate with a product called Zune. The Zune developers love Apple for having created the mass market for digital music, Gates said, trying to play nice; Apple loves Zune developers because, like everyone else, they all have iPods.
However, mainly they joined forces to defend the home computer, which is under threat from a host of other devices. "The death of the personal computer has been predicted every few years," Jobs said. "PCs are going to continue as a general purpose device, whether in a tablet form or a notebook or a big curved desktop you have in the house."
'Youngest Guys in the Room'
Latest News about Google and other upstart rivals snapping at their heels, the men looked back ruefully at their long histories. "When Bill and I first worked together," Jobs said, "we were both the youngest guys in the room. Now I am the oldest." He quoted the Beatles: "'You and I have memories longer than the road that stretches out ahead' -- that's clearly true here."
The pair were given a rock star welcome. While Gates is now concentrating on the philanthropic foundation giving away his US$53 billion (pounds 26.8 billion) fortune, he was as prone to geeky flights of fancy as ever. He predicted a home where "every horizontal and vertical surface will have a projector for information."
Steve Jobs, meanwhile, exuding cool as ever, took a long pause before giving his unwavering answer to questions of futurology: "I don't know. And that's what makes it exciting to go into work every day."

Connecting Military Nets Through Open Source Collaboration
Open framework permits each piece of the suite to be made available to users as soon as it is ready. "We don't intend to wait for the entire bundle because we'd be wasting warfighters' time. If there's a piece that's ready, we intend to spiral it out -- and the follow-on pieces as they come," Col. McLarney says.
The U.S. military is developing a suite of software applications Get the facts on wireless solutions suited to your industry. that will allow secure communications between different national computer networks. This capability is essential to both coalition operations and disaster relief missions.
The Cross Domain Collaborative Information Environment (CDCIE) is designed to meet combatant commanders' near-term needs to share data with a variety of networks operating at the secret level and below. Created by the U.S. Joint Forces Command's (JFCOM's) Joint Futures Laboratory in Suffolk, Va., the CDCIE uses an open software architecture that allows it to interoperate with other systems, and to be rapidly modified to meet warfighters' needs.
While the CDCIE was developed to overcome difficulties in multinational information sharing between coalition partners, the software also eases data transfer between the various branches of the U.S. Defense Department, U.S. government civilian agencies, state and local emergency responders, and nongovernment organizations.
"We need to share information in the way we're expected to conduct operations with all of those partners," relates Lt. Col. Edward McLarney, technical deputy for capability engineering, Joint Innovation and Experimentation Directorate, J-9.

Report: Cyberwarfare at Heart of China's Military Strategy

The Chinese People's Liberation Army has more in its arsenal than just missiles -- count computer viruses and other disruptive technologies among its weapons. The PLA is trying to transform itself into an army capable of winning conflicts against high-tech adversaries, according to a recent Department of Defense report.
The Chinese People's Liberation Army has set up "information warfare" units to create viruses for use in attacking enemy computer systems and networks, according to a Department of Defense report released Friday.
"The People's Liberation Army (PLA) is pursuing comprehensive transformation from a mass army designed for protracted wars of attrition on its territory to one capable of fighting and winning short-duration, high-intensity conflicts against high-tech adversaries -- which China refers to as 'local wars under conditions of informatization,'" the report says.
Viewed by the PLA as critical to achieving "electromagnetic dominance" early in a conflict, such computer-based weapons also include defensive measures to protect the country's own network systems, according to the report.
A Cyberwarfare Arsenal
Together, the efforts add up to a cyberwarfare arsenal that forms the heart of what PLA theorists call the country's Integrated Network Electronic Warfare strategy Barracuda Spam Firewall Free Eval Unit - Click Here to disrupt battlefield network information systems. The PLA began incorporating such technologies into its military exercises in 2005, the report says.
"China's continued pursuit of area-denial and antiaccess strategies is expanding from the traditional land, air and sea dimensions of the modern battlefield to include space and cyberspace," the report notes.
Eyes on Taiwan and Beyond
China has been modernizing its defense systems for several years now, including enhancing its strategic strike capabilities with the DF-31 intercontinental range ballistic missile.
The primary focus of China's military buildup so far has been Taiwan and the potential for conflict in the Taiwan Strait, the report says. "However, official documents and the writings of Chinese military strategists suggest Beijing is increasingly surveying the strategic landscape beyond Taiwan," the report warns.
China became the world's fourth-largest economy in 2006, according to the World Bank.
Ultimately, China "has the greatest potential to compete militarily with the United States and field disruptive military technologies that could over time offset traditional U.S. military advantages," according to the 2006 Quadrennial Defense Review Report.
More of Same
"This is not that new," Johannes Ullrich, chief technology officer at the SANS Institute, told TechNewsWorld. "For several years, it has been a standard part of their doctrine to use cybermeans to defend or attack."
Such technologies are already being used on an ongoing basis for information-gathering and standard espionage, Ullrich added, and the Chinese have proven their ability in the past to get into U.S. military networks.
"But it's difficult to predict the impact if a real military conflict arose," he said, noting that because of economic ties with the United States, "it may not be in their best interest to attack this country" anyway.
'The Next Battleground'
"This is just the next battleground, but it is something we need to take seriously because everything we have is connected to the Internet in one way or another," cybercrime lawyer and security expert Parry Aftab told TechNewsWorld. "The good thing is, the United States has been preparing for this for a long time."
Security technologies put in place both before and since Sept. 11, along with increased fortifications in financial networks today, have a net effect of helping to protect the country, Aftab added.
"It's all about communications," she explained. "The person who has the best communications will win when it comes to any kind of warfare. If you can stop someone else's communications and keep yours flowing, you'll be OK."

YouTube - Public Access for the Masses
YouTube creators Chad Hurley and Steve Chen aren't worried about the new video sites that have popped into the market, such as Joost and an as-yet unnamed venture from News Corp. The emerging players will offer slick content with high production values, but YouTube wants to focus on amateur, self-produced clips. "We want to entertain, inform and empower people with video around the world," said Hurley.

"We have been a little bit silent, but we haven't been sleeping," Chen told The Associated Press during the duo's first extensive interview since Google closed its US$1.76 billion purchase of YouTube last November.
The leaders of the online video revolution declined the AP's request to videotape the interview.

Microsoft vs. Open Source: Military Moves
We're now seeing Microsoft's true stripes. The performance of the products is a charade, an unfortunate cost of doing business in a once competitive market. The real means to profits and market share are really about legal positioning, but in essence necessitates a military posture. For what are laws and lawyers but a means to avoid violence and warfare in lieu of a day in court?
The latest moves by Microsoft, however, give them away. Stripped of their proxies, their moves are now more clearly understood to be essentially military. You are the civilians caught between Microsoft's lawyers and their quarry.

Sun's Web 2.0 Strategy: Still the Dot?
The combination of the open sourcing of our technology and the direction of the open source camp are really all directed to attracting people at the earliest stages of development," said Rich Green, executive vice president of software at Sun. "We are a much more diverse company now. So those organizations trying to create the next great thing can talk to Sun about solving the next technical problem.

Obama Wrests MySpace Page From Hapless Supporter

Sen. Barack Obama's presidential campaign organization reportedly has taken over a MySpace page independently created by supporter Joe Anthony in 2004, and has refused to pay for the time and effort he invested in attracting 160,000 "friends" to the senator's cause.
A virtual equivalent of fisticuffs has broken out online, and no, it is not between warring camps of "American Idol" fans or bloggers with too much time on their hands. Rather, the dispute is between a frontrunner for the Democratic presidential nomination and a once-ardent supporter.
While much of the argument falls into "he said, he said" territory, this much is clear: Joe Anthony, a Los Angeles paralegal, set up an unofficial MySpace Latest News about MySpace page for Senator Barack Obama at myspace.com/barackobama, after he heard his speech at the Democratic convention in 2004, and then invested time and energy into its development.
The Obama campaign got in touch with Anthony once his site -- which was rapidly attracting tens of thousands of MySpace "friends" -- appeared on its radar. For a while, a synergy apparently existed between the two.
Then the Obama campaign asked to take over the page, and the relationship quickly turned ugly. Anthony requested financial reimbursement for the time he had put into building the site, but the campaign reportedly refused to pay up. It then approached MySpace to obtain control of the site.
As Anthony says in his own blog posting on the matter: "I was blocked from the profile, and the content was altered to redirect traffic to the new, 'official' profile. MySpace has, in fact, granted access to the profile without my permission."
Yahoo Offers Chat With No Downloads Attached

Yahoo has put its Messenger program on the Web, allowing users to chat on the application without downloading software into their computers. While Yahoo certainly isn't the first to put chat on the browser, the announcement is important due to the sheer number of Yahoo chat users: 88.5 million, according to the company, which named Southeast Asia as a major focus of the initial rollout.
Latest News about Yahoo has introduced a new version of its popular Yahoo Messenger instant messaging service that eliminates the need to download and install software. Still in the beta phase, the new "Yahoo Messenger for the Web" is browser-based.
That means Yahoo Messenger users can log in to chat on any computer or other device with Web access, including PCs at companies that forbid software downloads. The new application is "the first brand-new Messenger in over six years," noted Jeff Bonforte, vice president of product development for Yahoo Messenger, in his blog.
Yahoo is far from the first Internet player to offer a Web-based instant messaging service -- AOL, Google. Latest News about Google, Meebo and eBuddy are among the competitors. Speeding the Arrival of the Integrated Enterprise
Enterprise
As elusive as the concept of the integrated enterprise has been, it's great to report that businesses of all sizes finally have options that can make it a reality. The only hurdle now is educating businesses to the productivity benefits that come with it. Hopefully, that doesn't take another 20 years to happen.
Looking at the current state of line-of-business applications and how companies use them to track and manage their operations, one can't help but notice how there's a strong resemblance to the days before the networked enterprise, circa 1987. Back then, resources were dispersed in little silos we called PCs, each with its own island of resources.
When we connected all those islands with the help of server Forge ahead and stay on budget with simple to install HP server technology. networking, we got huge returns. Suddenly we could share the same contract someone wrote using Microsoft Word instead of having to save it to a floppy and copying it manually. Life was great.
Why is it then that some 20 years later, most companies aren't doing the same with their business Save 15% on Your Next Domain Purchase. Click Here. systems? The problem is almost identical, except instead of individual PCs, it's individual applications. The vast majority of organizations run one application for their sales force automation, another for accounting, perhaps another for e-commerce, and so on.
Google Desktop for Mac Adds Wattage to Spotlight
Google Desktop for Mac is similar to Spotlight, Mac's built-in search app. Both have various options for sorting and narrowing results, though which is better depends on what you're seeking at the moment. Fortunately, the two can run side by side, and Desktop only adds to your Spotlight experience. What you won't get with this Desktop, however, is the fully featured version available for Windows.

Fon, Time Warner to Let Users Set Up WiFi Hotspots

Time Warner Cable and WiFi provider Fon on Monday agreed to let customers turn their Internet routers into public wireless hotspots. Hotspot providers are Fon members who share bandwidth via a Fon router in exchange for free WiFi access when roaming and connecting to any Fon access point.
Time Warner Cable has struck a deal with WiFi provider Fon that will let its home-based and business broadband customers turn their Internet connections into public wireless hotspots.
The move is somewhat evolutionary for American service providers who have traditionally shied away from permitting customers from using their services as public WiFi locations.
Under the agreement, Time Warner Cable subscribers will become Fon community members and be able to create Fon access points from their home- or business-based broadband connections.
The access points are controlled by the subscriber's secure Fon router, which splits a WiFi connection into an encrypted channel for the subscriber and a public one for neighbors or passers-by.
The router can decide how much bandwidth to share with the public -- other subscribers can log on to any Fon router without charge and nonmembers can pay a modest US$2 or $3 for 24 hours of access.

Wi-fi worry

Some schools are removing wi-fi networks after complaints from parents that their children suffer headaches. In what sounds like a re-run of mobile phone radiation panic, is there evidence for harm?
Sitting too close to the TV. Standing in front of the microwave. Spending too long on the mobile. Living under a pylon, or next to a phone mast. We've always worried about what the technology around us might do to our bodies.
Now, wi-fi is rolling out from the humble coffee shop hotspot to create swathes of wireless networks in towns and cities.
But some are concerned that we don't know enough about the health effects of electromagnetic radiation - the radio waves that allow the computer network to transmit (along with longwave, FM and TV and phone frequencies).
For others, headaches and skin rashes - that they feel are due to the radio waves - are prompting a big switch off.
Headache
I had thought, 'great, we can make use of it', but then I started getting a series of headaches that got worse
Teacher Michael Bevington
The worry for parents is that children, who have thinner skulls and developing systems, are exposed to more gadgets and gizmos than previous generations. What might these be doing to their bodies?
Health expert advice is to limit mobile phone use among young people as a precaution. The government advises users to keep calls short.
Engineer Anthony Wood, a father with two young children from Bristol, refuses to install a wi-fi network to link his family's three home computers.
"I don't like the idea of transmitting a microwave into your brain. The frequency is important, not just the power. The higher the frequency, the more energy there is in the waves. I think wi-fi waves are close to microwaves, yet they're on all the time.
"I see no evidence to suggest they could be harmful, but it takes an enormous amount of evidence to prove anything. I don't understand the medical side very well but I do understand the technical side - that of frequency and power. That's why I decided against installing a wireless network."
Learning tool
Teachers have also raised concerns. A staff member who develops shocking headaches after a day in the classroom may be a cliche. But this is what happened to Michael Bevington, a classics teacher at top independent school Stowe, in Buckinghamshire, after wi-fi was installed in his classroom.
"I had thought, 'great, we can make use of it'. But then I started getting a series of headaches that got worse over the next few days."
Twenty minutes on a mobile phone call is equivalent to a year in that classroom. It's a completely different level of exposure
Dr Michael Clark, HPA
Q&A: Wi-fi explained
Pains in the joints, heart palpitations and nausea followed, and he could tell if the wi-fi transmitters were on or off.
Like a number of other schools, Stowe has turned off some of its transmitters. But Mr Bevington says he is now sensitive to other sources of electro-magnetic radiation, such as phones, microwaves and fluorescent lights. He also has problems with city centre hotspots and his neighbours' wi-fi networks.
"The amount of microwave radiation in society needs to be completely reviewed. It's making it impossible for a small number of people," he says.
Hot spots
Other than anecdotal, what is the evidence to suggest a risk? There is no scientific proof that wi-fi can cause harm. But there is also a lack of research.
Experimental psychologist Dr Stacy Eltiti, of the University of Essex, researches sensitivity to telephone masts. The 3G signal is transmitted at a frequency not far off that of wi-fi at about 2.4 gigahertz. Hence her results, due in 2007, may hold some clues to wi-fi sensitivity as well.
"Everyone is exposed to mobile phone masts," she says. "You can opt not to own a computer or a mobile phone, but you go into your local town centre and they're everywhere. If there are physical impacts, we can investigate what these are."
Woman uses a laptop on a train
Wi-fi networks are rolling out apace
The current official advice is that exposure to wi-fi radio waves is comparatively low.
"In classrooms, a typical exposure is at 20 millionths of the guideline levels, whereas a mobile phone is 50% of guidelines," says Dr Michael Clark, science spokesman for the Health Protection Agency.
"Twenty minutes on a mobile phone call is equivalent to a year in that classroom. It's a completely different level of exposure. These are non-ionising radio waves. They're not X-rays, or gamma rays, or ultra violet. It's completely different in energy terms. I'm looking outside now and that's electromagnetic radiation - visible light. Radio energies are a million times less energetic than ultraviolet light."
But as people claim sensitivity to radio waves, he would welcome more research, given the rapid introduction of the new technology.
But currently, the more common concerns for users lie in wi-fi's cost, patchy coverage and network security.
As Peter Green, a senior lecturer at the University of Manchester says: "You wouldn't put your wi-fi right next to your bed, but I know more people who are turning it off because they are worried about security and other people hacking into their network."
Michael Dell's Linux, the Death of BlackBerry, 3 More Dads and Grads Gift Ideas

We expect our communications devices to work. If there is an outage, we require the vendor let us know, tell us how long it will last, and provide some suggestions as to a workaround while it continues to go on. RIM did none of that. RIM's behavior came across like the company simply didn't care that it had left every single one of its customers high and dry.

Nintendo Wows With Wii

The Nintendo Wii in March once again led video game console sales, according to NPD Group figures. However, another Nintendo platform logged breakneck sales for the month: the handheld DS, which sold over half a million units, almost twice as many as the Wii platform.
The Nintendo Wii Latest News about Wii outsold both its competitors, the Sony PlayStation 3 Latest News about PlayStation 3 and the Microsoft Xbox 360 Latest News about Xbox 360, in March, according to the latest figures from the NPD Group.
Nintendo continues to say it is having problems keeping up with demand for its units, citing "widespread shortages" for both the Wii and its handheld DS unit. While some industry observers wonder if Nintendo is purposely throttling down the production of its product to create an artificial over-demand situation, the company stressed "Wii remains the fastest-selling new console in more than a decade, based on NPD sell-through information over the first five months of availability."
Nintendo has increased production of Wii hardware to meet growing demand, the company claims. It points out that it has sold more game systems than all other manufacturers combined so far in 2007.

The Greening of Technology

With Earth Day 2007 nearing, the world is taking a closer look at how human activities affect the environment. Some of the technology industry's biggest players have taken the lead in the development of green IT and green technology, from implementing environmentally friendlier office policies to installing more energy-efficient computers.
Especially as Earth Day 2007 approaches, working to mitigate the effects of global warming and greenhouse gases, as well as protecting the environment, are topics on everyone's lips these days. As scientists, politicians, lobbyists and environmental activists offer arguments and counter arguments on the veracity of each other's claims, there is no dispute that the cost of energy continues a troublesome climb as does the size of the world's landfills.
While lawmakers around the world wrangle over car and factory emissions, international treaties, fossil fuels and the promotion of alternative energy, there are simple steps individuals and businesses can take to conserve energy and responsibly recycle their computers and other electronic devices.

If you are even thinking about going wireless in your home, this is a device that should at least be on your short list. I work in Information Technology and I have set up more than my share of Wireless Home networks. I have had people go out and buy the cheapest item they could find and then have to call me for an additional $50/hour to fix thier Wireless network. You can set this up at home yourself. It is that easy. The one thing bad thing about the device is that the Web Interface is very hard to navigate. If you are setting up your home, here are the order of things you want to do with ANY device.
1). If you have DSL, Call your provider and ask if you have PPPOE. If so, then get the settings from them before you disconnect your computer.
2). Plug in the device according to the instructions (yes guys, you HAVE to read the instructions.. but only the small insert)
3). The instructions will walk you thru connecting to the device via the web interface. Once you are logged in, you can either set up your PPPOE settings if you have DSL or "Clone" your MAC address if you have Cable Modem(Like I said, you may have to look around for the settings, but they are there).
4). DO NOT SET UP SECURITY YET... Instead, try to connect your wireless device and see if everything works.
5). Once you are connected, the you can go back into the Web Interface and lock down your Wireless network.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE lockdown your wireless network. You have no idea the things that can happen (and that I have seen) when your wireless connection is left to default. This order goes from the most minimal and easiest to do to the most difficult.
1). CHANGE THE PASSWORD... All Linksys devices come with the password "admin"... now everyoone knows your password.
2). Turn on WPA or at least WEP encryption.
3). Shut off "Broadcasting" your wireless connection. This will stop people from being able to connect to your network using normal Windows XP Built-in tools.
4). Use MAC filtering... each and every Wireless device has a encoded Machine Access Code built into it. When you set up MAC filtering, you are only allowing the Network Cards that are allowed in your system in and denying everything else.
